Travel Advice for Mourning Period

    Travelling in London

    Services are expected to be busier over the mourning period and there will be some station closures, especially around the Westminster area. Allow more time for journeys in and around London.

    • If you are planning to travel to London, Tube and rail are a good way of getting around the capital, although some stations may be busier than usual. Some short-term safety measures such as queueing, closures, non-stopping or changes to the way customers enter or exit a station may be necessary
    • Walking is often the best option to get around London, although during this time it may take longer than usual due to the crowds and road closures
    • Public transport is likely to be much busier and there are major road closures and changes to how buses run

    Tube 

    Tube, rail and walking will be the best way to get around central London at this time.

    • Every day up to and including Monday 19 September

      • Tube trains will run normally
      • Some stations will be busier than usual, and some short-term safety measures such as queuing, closures, non-stopping or changes to the way customers enter or exit a station may be necessary
      • Stations that are busier include: Westminster, Green Park, Charing Cross, Embankment, Victoria, Waterloo, St James’s Park, Lancaster Gate, Hyde Park Corner and Marble Arch
      • Green Park station is open for exit and interchange only from 10:00, starting to reopen fully from 20:00. Once the station starts to reopen, it may be busy and you may need to queue. The station remains open throughout for accessible journeys only
    • Sunday 18 September

      • Hyde Park Corner will close from 21:00

      Monday 19 September

      • Tube services will start at around 05:30 and will run for an extra hour in the evening to support customers leaving central London
      • Westminster station will be interchange only
      • St James’s Park and Hyde Park Corner stations will be closed
      • Marble Arch station will be closed from 13:00

    Elizabeth line

    • Central section (Paddington and Abbey Wood) will run on Sunday 18 September with a train every 5 minutes
    • East and West sections will run as normal
    • There will be one train per hour overnight until the start of normal service on Monday 19 September: 
      • Liverpool Street – Shenfield (not stopping at Maryland, Forest Gate, Manor Park, Seven Kings, Goodmayes, Chadwell Heath or Harold Wood). 
      • Paddington – Reading (not stopping at Acton Main line, West Ealing, Hanwell, Burnham or Taplow) 
    • Monday 19 September
      • Services between Paddington and Abbey Wood will run for an extra hour in the evening to support customers leaving central London
      • One train per hour will run overnight between Paddington and Reading only (not stopping at Acton Main line, West Ealing, Hanwell, Burnham or Taplow)

    Cycling

    Avoid the roads that are closed to motor traffic and use alternatives if possible. Central London will be very busy. It may be too crowded to cycle in some areas.

    Follow the instructions of stewards and police – you may need to dismount and walk at times.

    Cycleway 3 is suspended between Duke of Wellington Place and Northumberland Avenue. Follow the signed diversion.

    Some Santander Cycle Hire docking stations around Green Park, St James’s Park, Whitehall and Westminster will be closed.

    National Rail

    National Rail services into London are likely to be busier than usual, especially before and after ceremonial events.
