Hi Mooviters,
LA Metro is making progress on the East San Fernando Valley Light Rail Transit Project with advanced utility work set to begin starting this Friday, Feb. 21, until this fall.
The work will take place along Van Nuys Boulevard between Nordhoff Street and Woodman Avenue and will help pave the way for the future light rail line’s initial segment that will run between Van Nuys and Pacoima.
What does this mean for you?
Crews will install K-rail (concrete barriers) along southbound Van Nuys Blvd. between Vincennes Street and Plummer Street to create a safe work zone — the area in yellow on the above photo. These barriers will remain in place through this fall, with lane restrictions in effect.
Expect a weekend directional street closure on Van Nuys Blvd. from 6 p.m. this Friday, through Sunday, Feb. 23, weather permitting. Only one side of the street will be closed at a time, and detours will be in place to help guide traffic. Once this phase is completed, two lanes of traffic will remain open in each direction.
Here are the detour routes that will be used:

Bus stops in the area may be temporarily relocated, so riders should check for signage at stops indicating any changes. In some locations, bike lanes will merge with traffic lanes, so cyclists should use caution when traveling through the area.
Additional Information
- Work will take place Monday through Saturday, with day shifts behind K-rail from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. and night shifts from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.
- To implement the K-rail, Metro’s contractor will use two traffic control phases starting at 8 p.m. this Friday night and finishing around 6 a.m. Sunday morning. This will only take place this weekend in order to install the K-rail.
- Flaggers will be on-site to assist pedestrians and with traffic control.
- Parking will be restricted in posted areas.
- Gledhill Street, just west of Van Nuys Blvd., will be fully closed at night for about two weeks.
- Some side streets will be impacted during night-time directional closures.
