Public transport for New Year’s Eve 2023

Free travel

Metropolitan trains, trams, buses, and regional town buses will be free from 6pm on New Year’s Eve until 6am on New Year’s Day.

V/Line travel is also free from 6pm on New Year’s Eve to 6am on New Year’s Day. The first V/Line service on each line departing Melbourne on New Year’s Day is also free – even if it departs after 6am.

No valid myki is required during free travel periods. Metropolitan ticket barriers will be open at all stations and passengers touching on after 6pm won’t be charged. If passengers touch on before 6pm, they should make sure to touch off or they may be charged a default fare.

Passengers on the first timetabled V/Line services on New Year’s Day leaving Melbourne should avoid touching on to avoid myki money fares.
