Thousands of participants and spectators are expected to attend the annual Anzac Day Dawn Service in Martin Place and March along Elizabeth St. Major road closures and parking restrictions will be in effect for most of the day. Anzac Day participants and spectators are encouraged to plan ahead, leave the car at home and catch public transport. Travel on public transport is free for veterans and their families on Tuesday 25 April 2023.
Plenty of additional early morning public transport services including trains, metro, buses and light rail services will run to the city. Keep in mind buses will be diverting from their regular routes while roads are closed so plan ahead if you’re travelling by bus.
Roads around Martin Place start closing from 2am followed by major closures from 6am along and surrounding the Elizabeth St March route. Roads will reopen by 4pm.
While roads are closed and the march is underway, pedestrians can continue to cross Elizabeth St at Park St, Bathurst St and at Museum Station below ground crossings when safe to do so.
Metro
- Additional early morning services will run from 2:35am at Tallawong and from 3:15am at Chatswood to help you travel to the Dawn Service. Services run every 10 minutes thereafter to a regular Sunday timetable. Change at Epping to connect with train services towards the City.
- The closest train stations to the Dawn Service are Wynyard and Martin Place. Catch a train to Town Hall and change for a service to Martin Place leaving from Platform 5. Alternatively catch a train to Wynyard and walk to Martin Place.
- The closest trains stations to the March along Elizabeth St are Martin Place, St James, Museum and Town Hall stations. Trains run regularly to these stations during the day. After the March finishes at 1pm, trains will run to a regular public holiday timetable to get you back home.
Train
- Additional early morning trains will run from as early as 2:30am on suburban lines and from 12:30am on NSW TrainLink Intercity lines.
- The closest stations to the Dawn Service are Wynyard and Martin Place. Catch a train to Town Hall and change for a service to Martin Place leaving from Platform 5. Alternatively catch a train to Wynyard and walk to Martin Place.
- The closest stations to the March along Elizabeth St are Martin Place, St James, Museum and Town Hall stations. Trains run regularly to these stations during the day. After the March finishes at 1pm, trains will run to a regular public holiday timetable to get you back home.
Buses
- Buses will run to a public holiday timetable with additional early-morning services starting from 2.30am on key routes into the city from the Northern Beaches, Lower North Shore, Inner West, Hills District Lane Cove, Macquarie Park, Eastern Suburbs and Victoria Road.
- Keep in mind buses will be missing stops along and surrounding Martin Place and Elizabeth Street while roads are closed and you will need to walk further than usual to access the Dawn Service or March viewing areas.
Ferry
- Sydney Ferries will run to a public holiday timetable. Ferry services to Circular Quay don’t run early in the mornings on public holidays so to get to the Dawn Service you will need to catch a train or bus instead.
- If you’re catching ferries to the city for the March, change at Circular Quay for trains to Town Hall, St James or Museum, or change for light rail services to Town Hall to get within walking distance of Elizabeth St.
Light Rail
L1 Dulwich Hill Line
- L1 Dulwich Hill light rail services run between Central Grand Concourse and Dulwich Hill. Additional early morning services will run from 3am every 15 minutes between Central Grand Concourse and Dulwich Hill in both directions.
L2 Randwick and L3 Kingsford Lines
- L2 Randwick light rail services run between Circular Quay and Randwick via Central Station (Chalmers Street) and L3 Kingsford line services run between Circular Quay and Juniors Kingsford via Central Station (Chalmers Street).
- Additional early morning services will run from 3am between Town Hall and Randwick or Juniors Kingsford only. Services will not run between Town Hall and Circular Quay until 6am.
