Baby on Board: Tips for Traveling on Public Transit with your Child

March 18, 2019

Traveling on public transit with a baby or young child can be challenging – here are some survival techniques:

1. Optimal travel time
Try to time your journey outside of peak commuter hours and during your child’s nap time . The rocking motion of transit can help put them to sleep. Otherwise, travel when they’ve slept and been fed so they’re as happy as possible.
2. Take provisions
Don’t forget snacks and toys. Anything that can either distract them or they can find comfort in is best!
3. Know your way around
Planning is key. Find the best route using Moovit, and if you have a stroller, view accessible routes which direct users on step-free routes from street level to the train.
4. Interact with your child
Riding transit means you don’t need to worry about watching the road. Tickle your baby’s toes with a round of “this little piggy.” or play a game like “I spy with my little eye.”
5. Be compact
If your journey is short, use a baby carrier — it’s easier to maneuver and helps keep your child secure. If you need your stroller, make sure not to take too many other bags.
