Boston – Sumner Tunnel Closure Guide

July 5, 2024

    Hi Mooviters,

The Sumner Tunnel, connecting East Boston and Logan Airport to downtown Boston, will be closed from Friday, July 5 until Monday, August 5. There will be additional weekend closures after this closure.

MBTA is offering the following free or reduced-cost travel alternatives:

    🔵Blue Line

We recommended the Blue Line for riders traveling between downtown Boston and Logan Airport, Revere, or East Boston.

    • Ride cost: Free
    • Parking cost: $2/day
    • Service frequency: Every five minutes during morning and evening rush hours
    • Travel time: Under 25 minutes between Wonderland and Bowdoin

    🚉Commuter Rail

We recommend the Newburyport/Rockport Line for riders traveling between downtown Boston and cities and towns in the North Shore. Tickets can be purchased through the mTicket app or at any station. Additional coaches are being added to this line to respond to anticipated increased demand.

Between July 5 – August 5, one-way and monthly travel from any station along the entire line was discounted to the Zone 1A rate. Zone 1A passes will go on sale through mTicket starting on the 15th of the month prior.

    • Ride cost: $2.40 one-way or any Zone 1A pass
    • Parking cost: Free or $2/day
    • Service frequency: About every 30 minutes during morning and evening rush hours
    • Travel time: About 40 minutes to Boston from Salem or Swampscott

    ⛴ Ferry

We recommend the ferries below for riders traveling between downtown Boston and East Boston, Lynn, or Winthrop. Tickets can be purchased through the mTicket app or on board the Lynn or Winthrop/Quincy ferries.

Skip the TSA line at Logan Airport: Logan Airport offers a Ticket to Skip program so that all passengers arriving by water transportation—including MBTA ferries and water taxis—receive a ticket to skip to the front of the TSA security screening line. All water transportation to Logan arrives at the Logan Airport Ferry Dock by the Hyatt Hotel, then transfers to a free airport shuttle. You’ll get the ticket to skip on the shuttle.

    East Boston

We recommend riders take the East Boston Ferry between Lewis Mall (East Boston) and Long Wharf (North).

    • Ride cost: Free
    • Parking cost: Parking not available
    • Service frequency: Weekdays and weekends

    Lynn

We recommend riders take the Lynn Ferry between Blossom Street Pier in Lynn and Long Wharf (North) in Boston.

    • Ride cost: $2.40 one-way or any Zone 1A pass, with the exception of Zone 1A single-ride tickets
    • Parking cost: Free at the Blossom Street Pier parking lot
    • Service frequency: Weekdays and weekends

    Winthrop/Quincy

We recommend riders take the Winthrop/Quincy Ferry between Winthrop, Quincy, Logan Airport, Aquarium (Central Wharf), and Seaport.

    • Ride cost: $2.40 one-way or any Zone 1A pass, with the exception of Zone 1A single-ride tickets
    • Parking cost: Free parking at Winthrop Landing and Squantum Point Park / Marina Bay in Quincy
    • Service frequency: Weekdays only

    🚍 Bus

The following bus routes are free during the closure:

    • 111
    • 112
    • 114
    • 116
    • 117

    Service Changes

    • 111: Extra service will operate on weekday mornings to accommodate for expected delays on the Tobin Bridge
    • 117: Early morning trips that typically operate into downtown Boston via the Sumner Tunnel will be diverted to the Ted Williams Tunnel. Please expect slightly longer runtimes as a result.
    • 450: Service will reroute from Salem to terminate at Wood Island instead of Haymarket during the closure. This route will charge Local Bus fare instead of Express fare during this time period.

    ⚪️Silver Line

We recommend the Silver Line for riders traveling between the airport and downtown Boston or Chelsea.
