New Year’s Eve Special Transport Operations on Rio de Janeiro

    Welcome to Rio! There is a special public transportation operation taking place in Rio de Janeiro metro area for New Year’s Eve. Check on this article for the key information on how to plan your trip and have a troubleless celebration.

    Be aware of possible traffic changes in different areas. In some parts of the city, cars, buses, and taxis have limited access during New Year’s Eve, so MetrôRio is the best option available. You will need special tickets to access MetrôRio stations before and after midnight – unfortunately already sold out.

     

     MetrôRio (subway/metro)
    🚨 Be alert when buying the special tickets: only buy tickets inside MetrôRio’s stations, at the Special Ticket Booths. Refuse all offers from unknown people. For more info, contact a MetrôRio representative.

    Between 7 pm and 11:59 pm on 31/12:
    ⬆️ Boarding: Only will be accepted the special tickets sold anticipatedly on MetrôRio’s Special Ticket Booth. All the lines 1 (orange), 2 (green) and 4 (yellow)’s stations will be open for boarding.
    🚇 Operation:
     (orange): Jardim Oceânico ↔ Uruguai
     (green): Pavuna ↔ General Osório
    Cardeal Arcoverde station: from 11:59pm on 31/12 the station will be open only for exit.

    Between 0 am and 7 am on 01/01:
    ⬆️ Boarding: Only Jardim Oceânico, General Osório, Cantagalo, Siqueira Campos and Cardeal Arcoverde stations will be open for boarding, exclusively with special tickets. All the other stations will be open only for exit.
    🚇 Operation:
     (orange): Jardim Oceânico ↔ Uruguai
     (green): Pavuna ↔ General Osório

    From 7 am on 01/01 onwards:
    ⬆️ Boarding: Boarding allowed with all regular cards (MetrôRio’s Giro card, RioCard, Visa credit cards with NFC enabled and MetrôRio’s single).
    🚇 Operation:
     (orange): Jardim Oceânico ↔ Uruguai
     (green): Pavuna ↔ Estácio
    Cidade Nova station: closed for boarding and exit
    Praça Onze station: closed for boarding and exit
    Presidente Vargas station: closed for boarding and exit
    Uruguaiana station: closed for boarding and exit
    Catete station: closed for boarding and exit.
    ⚠️ Be aware: Transfers between lines 1 and 2 only can be made at Estácio station.

    From 5 am on 02/01 onwards:
    ✅ Normal operations and all stations will be open for boarding and exit according on MetrôRio’s regular operation. 

     

     SuperVia Train System (metropolitan trains)
    ⬆️ Boarding: Boarding allowed with RioCard, SuperVia Pre-paid and Mastercard cards with NFC enabled (on main stations). Single trip tickets will also be available at SuperVia’s Ticket Booth (cash only).
    🚊 Operation: There will be additional trains on 01/01 (local service trains), according to the table below. 

    Deodoro line (red)
    ⚠️ The Deodoro Line Stations will be served by trains of Japeri (turquoise) and Santa Cruz (green) lines.

    Santa Cruz line (green)

    🕐 3:30 am

    Belford Roxo line (purple)
    ⚠️ There will be no special train service on this line. Better use MetrôRio’s Line 2 (green) or SuperVia’s Deodoro Line (red).

     

     VLT Carioca (Downtown Tramway)
    ⬆️ Boarding: All the regular RioCard cards will be accepted. Be aware: the card is individual. The non-payment of the fare may result in a fine and trouble in leaving the country.
    🚊 Operation: There will be no special operation on 01/01. Normal services from 6 am, with regular holiday timetables, with headway up to 10- 20 minutes on 1 (blue), 2 (green) and 3 (yellow) lines.

     

     BRT Rio (bus rapid service network)
    ⬆️ Boarding: All the regular RioCard cards will be accepted.
    🚊 Operation: the BRT bus operations will follow the regular holiday timetable, with 24h departures on all the stations on TransOeste, TransCarioca, and TransOlímpica stations.
