KMB New Regional Two-Way Sectional Fare Scheme

August 7, 2020

Cheaper rides within Tuen Mun, Yuen Long, & Tin Shui Wai

From 8th August 2020, 17 bus routes serving the Northwest New Territories will implement two-way sectional fares in the first regional two-way sectional fare scheme in Hong Kong. KMB has set up Octopus card readers (Pictured below) at bus stops in Tuen Mun, Yuen Long and Tin Shui Wai in accordance with the sectional fare arrangement and the power supply facilities at bus stops, allowing passengers on relevant routes to get off the bus and tap their cards to obtain fare rebate.

After getting off the bus and tapping the card on the reader, part of the fare will automatically be returned to the Octopus card.

The 17 bus routes which will implement two-way sectional fares are Routes 58M, 58X, 63X, 68A, 68X, 69M, 69X, 260X, 268B, 268C, 268X, 269B, 269C, 269D, 276, 276A and 276P. The card readers are located at multiple bus stops, including Waldorf Garden, Tung Lok Street, Yuen Long (West) Bus Terminus, YOHO Mall I, YOHO Mall II, Yuen Long Station, Yiu Man House Tin Yiu Estate, Tin Yau Court, etc.

Generally, the bus fare is based on the distance between the pick-up point and the bus terminus of the destination. The fare decreases as passengers board the bus at a point nearer the terminus. However, if a passenger gets off the bus halfway, the fare is still based on the distance between the pick-up point and the bus terminus. In the past, only individual routes allowed passengers to tap the Octopus cards in the compartment before getting off the bus, so as to implement two-way sectional fare. Now, KMB has overcome environmental constraints by installing card readers at the bus stops with an electricity supply, making it possible for regional two-way sectional fares. This not only provides passengers with choices and comfortable bus service but also eases the burden of public transport.

Under the new regional sectional fare scheme, all passengers with a valid Octopus card (expect the KMB Monthly Pass) pay the full fare when they get on the bus. After getting off the bus and tapping the card on the card readers, part of the fare will automatically be returned to the Octopus card. Taking Route 268C as an example, the full fare from Long Ping Station to Kwun Tong Ferry is $18.40. If passengers get off at a midway station in Yuen Long district, they can get a refund of $14.10 after tapping their card, thus paying only $4.30 for the bus fare.

The sectional fare scheme does not operate in conjunction with any interchange concession. Passengers who have used their relevant Octopus card for transactions of public transport mode between getting on the buses and using the card readers at the bus stops are not eligible for the sectional fare scheme.
