NYC – New Year’s Eve Transit Guide

    Get ready to count down to 2024 at NYC’s iconic ball drop or one of the many parties being hosted across the city! Your favorite transit app is here so you can welcome the New Year hassle-free!

    Updates for you:

    🎇 MTA, LIRR, and MNR will offer additional service to help partygoers get to the parties and home again! Details below.

    ⚠️ Uptown 1 trains will skip 50 St and N Q R trains will skip 49 St immediately before and after the ball drop. New York City buses will be detoured around Midtown. Details are below and as always Moovit is updated. Use our trip planner for up-to-date routes.

    🥂 To support rider safety, Alcohol is not allowed on LIRR & MNR trains or stations from noon on December 31 to noon on January 1.


    New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day Transit Updates for MTA, LIRR and MNR

    MTA Subway

    On Sunday, Dec. 31, & Monday, Jan. 1, subways will run on a Sunday schedule with the following exceptions.   

    • Uptown 1 ​trains will skip 50 St between 11:45 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 31 and 12:15 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 1. 
    • N Q R trains will skip 49 St between 11:45 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 31 and 12:15 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 1. 
    • Exits to street level at Times Sq-42 St will be subject to NYPD closures on New Year’s Eve. 

    Additional subway service will run on the 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 C D L N Q R ​​​​​​​​​​​​​and 42 St S  ​lines on New Year’s Eve to help customers get to the festivities.  

    New York City Buses

    On Sunday, Dec. 31, & Monday, Jan. 1, buses will run on a Sunday schedule.   
    The following bus routes will be detoured around midtown from Sunday 2:00 PM till Monday 1:00 AM: Northound M5, M7, M10, M12, M20, Westbound M34A-SBS, M42, Eastbound M50, M55, and M104.

    LIRR

    On New Year’s Eve, the LIRR will be on a weekend/holiday schedule with the addition of extra evening westbound trains.   

    For westbound customers attending events in New York City, LIRR will operate twelve additional evening trains. Eight extra trains will operate to Penn Station and four extra trains will operate to Grand Central Madison.  

    On New Year’s Day, the LIRR will operate on a regular weekend/holiday schedule, with extra trains for customers heading home after New Year’s Eve events.   
    Fifteen additional early morning eastbound trains will operate to Long Island. Nine extra trains will operate from Penn Station, six extra trains will operate from Grand Central Madison.  
    In addition, the LIRR will provide extra post-event service from Elmont-UBS Arena following the Billy Joel concert scheduled for New Year’s Eve.  

    Metro-North Railroad

    On Sunday, Dec. 31, Metro-North will operate on a Sunday schedule. Additional outbound service from Grand Central Terminal will operate after midnight until 5 a.m.  

    On West of Hudson lines, additional service will run after midnight on the Pascack Valley and Port Jervis lines. 

    On Monday, Jan. 1, Metro-North will operate on a special schedule with hourly service at most stations.
