During song contest week, from May 11 to May 16, 2026, public transport services across Vienna will be significantly increased. Due to the expected number of visitors, Wiener Linien is planning more frequent metro services, extended operating hours and additional tram connections around the city’s busiest areas and event locations.
🚇 More frequent metro services
Throughout the week, Vienna’s metro lines will run more frequently than usual — especially in the evenings and late at night.
Planned service increases include:
- U2 and U6: shorter intervals, with trains running as often as every 5 minutes during the busiest evenings
- U1, U3 and U4: additional departures and extended evening service
- Increased capacity around major venues and city-center hotspots
The strongest service increases are expected on the evenings of May 15 and 16.
🌙 Extended late-night service
To help visitors travel home more easily after evening events, several lines will operate later into the night.
Planned extensions include:
- Tram lines 6, 18 and 49 running until around 2:00 AM on multiple nights
- Additional late-night services on busy routes
- More connections toward Stadthalle, Karlsplatz and the city center
On the final night, May 16, frequencies will increase even further:
- U2 and U6: approximately every 5 minutes until around 2:00 AM
- U1, U3 and U4: approximately every 7.5 minutes until around 2:30 AM
🚋 Additional trams & special services
Extra tram services will operate on some of the city’s busiest routes to help reduce waiting times.
Areas most affected include:
- The route between Volkstheater and Stadthalle
- Central Vienna and major interchange stations
- Areas around event venues and fan zones
Additional special services are also expected on heavily used routes.
📍 Areas expected to be busier than usual
Higher passenger volumes are expected in the following areas during song contest week:
- Karlsplatz
- Volkstheater
- Stadthalle
- Praterstern
- Rathausplatz
- The city center around Ringstraße & MuseumsQuartier
Stations and platforms may become especially crowded in the late evening hours.
