Major works this summer
Works continue on some of the state’s biggest transport projects this summer. Critical maintenance works will also take place on our rail, tram and road networks to ensure services continue to run reliably.
There’ll be disruptions to the public transport and road networks while these works take place. Be sure to plan ahead and allow extra time or take an alternative route if possible.
Free travel on Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve after 6pm
On Christmas Day 25 December, metropolitan and regional public transport will be free from 3am until 3am on Boxing Day 26 December.
Public transport will also be free from 6pm on New Year’s Eve 31 December until 6am on New Year’s Day 1 January.
Public transport will run to an altered timetable on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year’s Day and the public holidays.
Metro Trains
Craigieburn and Werribee Lines
- Craigieburn and Werribee trains run direct to and from Southern Cross from 9pm to last train each night from Sunday 2 January to Wednesday 5 January, due to works.
Cranbourne and Pakenham Lines
- Buses replace trains between Flinders Street and Caulfield from first service Thursday 16 December to last service Thursday 23 December.
- Trains on the Cranbourne and Pakenham lines will only run to/from Caulfield Station from 9pm to last train each night from Sunday 2 January to Wednesday 5 January, due to works.
Frankston and Stony Point Lines
- Buses replace trains in sections on the Frankston and Stony Point lines from 8.30pm Monday 13 December to last service Thursday 23 December due to project and maintenance works.
Hurstbridge and Mernda Lines
- Buses replace trains between Parliament, Heidelberg and Reservoir stations from 9pm Sunday 2 January to last service Sunday 9 January 2022, due to Hurstbridge Line Duplication works.
Sandringham Line
- Buses replace trains between South Yarra and Sandringham stations from 8.15pm to last train each night, Sunday 2 January to Wednesday 5 January 2022, due to works.
Sunbury Line
- Buses replace Sunbury line trains between North Melbourne and Sunshine stations from 8.45pm to last train each night from Sunday 2 January to Wednesday 5 January 2022, due to works.
Upfield Line
- Buses replace trains between North Melbourne and Upfield stations from 8.35pm to last train each night from Sunday 2 January to Wednesday 5 January, due to works.
