NYC – New Year’s Eve Transit Guide

    Updates for you:

    🚇 On Tuesday, Dec. 31, New York City subways will operate on a regular weekday schedule, with increased service on the ​​1 2 3 4 5 6 7 C D L N Q R and 42 St S in the evening into post-midnight hour. The A train will be running express until 2:45 a.m.

    🎇 MTA, LIRR, and MNR will offer additional service to help partygoers get to the parties and home again! Details below.

    🥂 To support rider safety, Alcohol is not allowed on LIRR & MNR trains or stations from noon on December 31 to noon on January 1.


    New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day Transit Updates for MTA, LIRR and MNR

    MTA Subway

    On Tuesday, Dec. 31, New York City subways will operate on a regular weekday schedule, with increased service on the ​​1 2 3 4 5 6 7 C D L N Q R and 42 St S in the evening into post-midnight hour. The A train will be running express until 2:45 a.m.

    Some entrance/exits at 42 St-Bryant Pk D F , 5 Av 7 , 7 Av D E, 59 St-Columbus Circle 1 A C D and 57 St-7 Av N Q R may be closed during the Ball Drop at Time Square.

    On Wednesday, Jan. 1, New York City subways will operate on a Sunday schedule.  

    New York City Buses

    On Tuesday, Dec. 31, bus routes in the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Manhattan and some bus routes in Queens are operating on a reduced weekday schedule, while other routes in Queens are operating a regular weekday schedule. Buses on Staten Island will operate on a weekday school closed schedule.  Bus routes in and around Midtown are subject to detours around road closures.

    On New Year’s Day, Wednesday, Jan. 1, buses in all five boroughs will operate on a Sunday schedule.

    LIRR

    On Tuesday, Dec. 31, there will be a total of 11 additional LIRR trains on the Babylon, Montauk, Ronkonkoma, Port Jefferson and Port Washington branches to Grand Central Madison or Penn Station beginning in the early evening to accommodate riders heading into the city for New Year’s Eve celebrations. 

    After midnight, there will be a total of 12 additional trains beginning in the early overnight hours to accommodate riders heading back to Long Island from Penn Station or Grand Central Madison.

    In addition, the LIRR will provide extra pre and post-event service to and from Elmont-UBS Arena for the Billy Joel concert scheduled for New Year’s Eve.

    On Wednesday Jan. 1, all LIRR trains will operate on a Sunday schedule.

    Alcohol is not allowed on LIRR trains or at stations on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

    Metro-North Railroad

    Beginning Monday, Dec. 30, Metro-North will operate on a regular weekday schedule on the three East of Hudson lines with extra late-evening and post-midnight service on New Year’s Eve and into New Year’s morning.

    On New Year’s Day, Metro-North will operate hourly service, with extra trains on the New Haven Line, and regular weekend service on the Wassaic, Danbury and Waterbury branches.

    The West of Hudson Lines will operate on a regular weekday schedule, with extra service in the late evening and after midnight on New Year’s Eve, and a weekend schedule on New Year’s Day.

    Alcohol is not allowed on Metro-North Railroad trains or at stations on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

    NJ Transit

    New Year’s Eve, Dec 31st:

    • Rail: Modified weekday service with extra service to New York/Hoboken on select lines during the evening
    • Bus: Most lines on a weekday schedule or special holiday schedule. Service may include AM peak and/or PM peak trip reductions and/or early-getaway service from the PABT between noon and 4 PM. Extra outbound service from New York and on the 13, 21, and 25 lines in the Newark area between midnight and 6 AM.
    • Light Rail: Regular weekday schedules

    New Year’s Day, Jan 1st:

    • Rail: Extra overnight service from PSNY/Hoboken, with connecting service at Newark Broad Street/Summit/Long Branch. Certain trains that normally operate between midnight and 1:30 a.m. will be cancelled. After 6 a.m., regular weekend schedule (with Port Jervis Line Train 88 operating)
    • Bus: Most lines on either a Saturday or Sunday schedule.
    • Light Rail: Newark Light Rail will operate on Saturday/Holiday schedule. HBLR and River LINE will operate on Sunday/holiday schedules

    Reminder: All beverages, including alcohol, are not permitted on NJ TRANSIT buses at any time regardless of event.

    On New Year’s Eve, December 31, trains will operate on a modified weekday schedule (morning peak period and midday adjustments, as outlined in the section for December 26-31) with additional service to New York and Hoboken from the late afternoon through the evening on the RVL, M&E and Port Jervis Lines

    After midnight (early January 1), additional late-night trains will operate on all rail lines except the Atlantic City Line. Additional trains will depart Penn Station New York, Hoboken and Trenton, with connecting trains departing from Newark Broad Street, Summit and Long Branch through the early morning hours. Raritan Valley Line service operates from New York all night. Several trains that normally operate between 11:30 p.m. on New Year’s Eve and 1:30 a.m. early New Year’s morning are canceled and replaced by later trains. After 6:30 a.m., a regular weekend/major holiday schedule operates (including Port Jervis Line Train 88).
