MBTA – Winter 2025 Service Changes & Phase 1 Bus Network Redesign Service Changes

    On Sunday, December 15th, MBTA is launching its Winter Service Changes and Phase 1 of Bus Network Redesign Service Changes. Moovit is updated!

    Phase 1 of the Bus Network Redesign Service Changes will include updates for 6 routes in Chelsea, Everett, Revere, Malden, Somerville, Cambridge, Allston, Brighton, and East Boston.

    Here’s what to expect:

    • Service changes to six bus routes: Routes 86, 104, 109, 110, 116 and 117.
    • Routes 104, 109, 110, and 116 will become Frequent Bus Routes, increasing service to every 15 minutes or better during service hours every day.
    • New connections to the Red, Orange, Green, and Blue lines and Logan Airport.

    MBTA’s winter service changes includes improved frequency and faster travel times on the Green, Red, Orange and Blue Lines. In additional, many bus routes will be adjusted to better reflect demand. Continue reading below.


    Phase 1 Bus Network Redesign Service Changes

    The Bus Network Redesign is an initiative by MBTA to update its bus network to better match service to where people live, work, learn, and play. The updated routes and schedules are based on community feedback. 

    Phase 1 service changes will begin on Sunday, December 15th, with six routes in Chelsea, Everett, Revere, Malden, Somerville, Cambridge, Allston, Brighton, and East Boston. 

    Here’s what to expect:

    • Service changes to six bus routes: Routes 86, 104, 109, 110, 116 and 117.
    • Routes 104, 109, 110, and 116 will become Frequent Bus Routes, increasing service to every 15 minutes or better during service hours every day.
    • New connections to the Red, Orange, Green, and Blue lines and Logan Airport.

    Route 86: Reservoir – Harvard Square

    Today, Route 86 runs from Reservoir through Cambridge to Sullivan.

    Changes on December 15

    • Route 86 will run more frequently during midday, evenings, and weekends.
    • It will run from about 5 AM to 1 AM daily.
    • Route 86 will be shortened to run from Reservoir to Harvard in Cambridge. It will no longer continue to Sullivan.
    • Riders traveling from Harvard to Sullivan can use Route 109, which will replace Route 86 on this part of Washington Street.
      • Route 109 will be upgraded to a Frequent Bus Route, with service every 15 minutes or better.
      • Riders can transfer at Harvard towards Sullivan in the Upper Busway, and transfer towards Reservoir at street level at Eliot St and Bennett St.

    Route 104: Malden Center – Logan Airport

    Today, Route 104 runs from Sullivan to Malden Center through Everett and Malden.

    Changes on December 15

    • Service will increase to every 15 minutes or better every day during service hours as Route 104 is upgraded to a Frequent Bus Route.
    • Service will run from about 4:30 AM to 1:30 AM daily.
    • Route 104 will be rerouted to offer new, crosstown service between Malden and Logan Airport. It will follow the existing route from Malden Center to Everett Square. Instead of going south to Sullivan, it will go east to Airport.
    • Riders traveling to stops toward Sullivan beyond Everett Square can transfer to Route 109 at Broadway at Norwood St. Route 109 will also be upgraded to a Frequent Bus Route.
    • Riders traveling between Sullivan and Everett Square towards Malden Center can take Route 109 to Broadway at Everett Square and transfer to Route 104 towards Malden Center.

    Route 109: Linden Square – Harvard Square

    Today, Route 109 runs through Everett from Linden Square in Malden to Sullivan Square, mostly along Broadway.  

    Changes on December 15

    • Service will increase to every 15 minutes or better every day during service hours as Route 109 is upgraded to a Frequent Bus Route.
    • Service will run from about 4:30 AM to 1:45 AM weekdays, and about 4:45 AM to 1:45 AM weekends.
    • It will continue to run from Linden Square to Sullivan Square, and will be extended past Sullivan to Harvard. This extension of Route 109 will replace the existing Route 86 on Washington Street between Sullivan Square and Harvard Square.
    • This extended route will provide a new direct connection from Everett to the Green Line in Somerville and the Red Line at Harvard Square.

    Route 110: Wonderland Station – Wellington Station

    Today, Route 110 offers crosstown bus service through Everett and Revere, running from Wellington to Wonderland via Broadway, Chelsea Street, Ferry Street, Elm Street, Park Avenue, Central Avenue, Beach Street, and North Shore Road.

    Changes on December 15

    • Service will increase to every 15 minutes or better every day during service hours as Route 110 is upgraded to a Frequent Bus Route.
    • Service will run from about 5 AM to 1:30 AM daily.
    • All trips will serve Wellington to Wonderland.
    • Some bus stop locations in Revere Center will be modified.

    Routes 116 and 117: Wonderland Station – Maverick Station

    Today, Route 116 provides service from Wonderland to Maverick via Revere Street, Broadway, Bellingham Sq, and Meridian St. Route 117 provides service from Wonderland to Maverick via Central Ave and Beach Street. Most of the route is the same as Route 116, except the final section on Beach Street near Wonderland.

    Changes on December 15

    • Routes 116 and 117 will be combined into one route, which will follow the same route the 116 uses today between Wonderland and Maverick.
    • Route 116 will become a Frequent Bus Route, with service every 15 minutes or better during service hours.
    • Service will run from about 4:15 AM to 1:45 AM daily.
    • Route 117 will be discontinued. Riders on Central Ave and Beach St may use Route 110, transferring to 116 at Broadway at Park Ave in Revere or at Wonderland.
    • Riders traveling between Maverick and Revere Center looking to access stops on Central Ave and Beach St may use Route 116, transferring to Route 110 at Broadway at Central Ave.

    Winter Service Changes

    MBTA is adjusting service for the T and buses. All changes will be shown in the Moovit App. 

    Subway:

    Green Line: Trips shift throughout the day, every day, to improve schedule reliability.

    Red Line: Faster travel times from improved track conditions and increased frequency every day to reduce crowding.

    Orange Line: Faster travel times from improved track conditions and increased frequency every day to reduce crowding.

    Blue Line: Weekday evening frequency improves from every 9 minutes to every 8 minutes between 9 PM and 11:30 PM to reduce crowding.

    Bus:

    • Route 7: Some morning peak trips on weekdays end at South Station to improve frequency and reduce crowding; other trips shift.
    • Route 9: Weekday frequency decreases in the late morning.
    • Route 11: Weekday frequency increases between 7 AM and 8 AM to reduce crowding.
    • Route 15: On weekdays and Saturday, the early morning Haymarket route changes due to Sudbury St allowing two-way traffic.
    • Route 22: Weekday trips shift throughout the day to improve schedule reliability.
    • Route 23: Weekday trips shift throughout the day to improve schedule reliability.
    • Route 28: Weekday trips shift throughout the day to improve schedule reliability; On weekdays and Saturday, the early morning Haymarket route changes due to Sudbury St allowing two-way traffic.
    • Route 29: Weekday trips shift throughout the day to improve schedule reliability.
    • Route 30: Weekday trips shift throughout the day to improve schedule reliability.
    • Route 32: Weekday trips shift throughout the day to improve schedule reliability; On weekdays and Saturday, the early morning Haymarket route changes due to Sudbury St allowing two-way traffic.
    • Route 33: Weekday trips shift throughout the day to improve schedule reliability and reduce crowding.
    • Route 34: Weekday frequency increases in the afternoon and trips shift to reduce crowding.
    • Route 34E: Weekday trips shift throughout the day to improve schedule reliability and reduce crowding.
    • Route 39: Trip added at 2:28 PM on weekdays; Weekday frequency increases between 6:45 AM and 9:45 AM; On weekdays and Saturday, the early morning Haymarket route changes due to Sudbury St allowing two-way traffic.
    • Route 52: Weekday frequency increases and trips shift to improve schedule reliability.
    • Route 57: Some peak trips on weekdays turn at Oak Square to improve frequency and reduce crowding; On weekdays and Saturday, the early morning Haymarket route changes due to Sudbury St allowing two-way traffic.
    • Route 60: Weekday trips shift in the late afternoon to improve schedule reliability.
    • Route 62: Weekday trips shift throughout the day to improve schedule reliability.
    • Route 67: Weekday trips shift throughout the day to improve schedule reliability.
    • Route 69: Weekday trips shift in the early and late morning to improve schedule reliability and reduce crowding.
    • Route 75: Inbound trips on Saturdays shift after 7 PM to improve schedule reliability.
    • Route 76: Weekday trips shift throughout the day to improve schedule reliability.
    • Route 77: Trips shift throughout the day, every day, to improve schedule reliability.
    • Route 78: Inbound trips on Saturdays shift after 7 PM to improve schedule reliability.
    • Route 80: Saturday trips shift throughout the day to improve schedule reliability.
    • Route 83: Weekday frequency decreases during midday and increases in peak times; Weekday trips shift throughout the day to improve schedule reliability.
    • Route 86: As part of the Bus Network Redesign, all trips operate between Reservoir and Harvard on a new schedule. Route 109 replaces Route 86 service between Harvard and Sullivan.
    • Route 91: Weekday trips shift throughout the day to accommodate construction at Central Square.
    • Route 95: Saturday evening trips shift to improve schedule reliability.
    • Route 97: Trips shift throughout the day, every day, to improve schedule reliability.
    • Route 101: Weekday frequency decreases and trips shift throughout the day to improve schedule reliability; Saturday and Sunday trips shift throughout the day to improve schedule reliability.
    • Route 104: As part of the Bus Network Redesign, all trips extend from Everett Square to Airport instead of going to Sullivan. Frequency increases to every 15 minutes.
    • Route 109: As part of the Bus Network Redesign, all trips extend to Harvard via Union Square and Sullivan stop moves to the upper busway. Frequency increases to every 15 minutes or better.
    • Route 110: As part of the Bus Network Redesign, outbound service operates via Broadway in Revere instead of the Revere fire station. Frequency increases to every 15 minutes or better.
    • Route 111: Sunday frequency increases to every 15 minutes between 11 PM and 1 AM.
    • Route 114: Weekday trips shift between 9 AM and 4:30 PM to improve schedule reliability.
    • Route 116: As part of the Bus Network Redesign, Routes 116 and 117 are combined into one route. Frequency on Route 116 increases to every 15 minutes or better.
    • Route 117: As part of the Bus Network Redesign, Route 117 is discontinued. Frequency on Routes 110 and 116 increases to every 15 minutes or better to replace 117 service.
    • Route 120: Weekday morning and afternoon trips shift to address crowding at East Boston High School.
    • Route 134: Outbound trip added at 2:18 PM on weekdays to serve increased ridership at Andrews Middle School.
    • Route 201: Sunday trips shift before 10 AM and between 7 PM and 9:30 PM.
    • Route 210: Weekday frequency decreases between 5:30 AM and 6:30 PM; Saturday trip shifts from 6:45 PM to 6:50 PM.
    • Route 211: Weekday route changes to avoid traffic congestion near Wollaston School; Sunday trip shifts from 4:11 PM to 4:10 PM.
    • Route 215: Trips shift throughout the day, every day, to improve schedule reliability.
    • Route 216: Weekday morning trips shift to improve frequency and reduce crowding; Saturday and Sunday trips shift to improve schedule reliability.
    • Route 217: Weekday morning and evening trips shift to improve schedule reliability; Weekday route changes to avoid traffic congestion near Wollaston School.
    • Route 220: Frequency decreases and trips shift every day.
    • Route 222: Frequency decreases and trips shift every day.
    • Route 225: Saturday and Sunday trips shift throughout the day to improve schedule reliability.
    • Route 230: Trips shift throughout the day, every day, to improve schedule reliability.
    • Route 236: Weekday frequency increases to improve schedule reliability; Saturday and Sunday trips shift.
    • Route 238: Weekday and Sunday trips shift throughout the day to improve schedule reliability.
    • Route 240: Weekday morning frequency increases to reduce crowding; Saturday and Sunday trips shift throughout the day to improve schedule reliability.
    • Route 411: Saturday trip shifts from 12:19 PM to 12:18 PM to improve schedule reliability.
    • Route 424: Weekday trips shift throughout the day to improve schedule reliability.
    • Route 450: Weekday frequency decreases and trips shift to improve schedule reliability; Saturday and Sunday frequency increases.
    • Route 505: Outbound trip at 8:18 AM and inbound trip at 9:10 AM on weekdays are eliminated.
    • Route 554: Weekday trips shift throughout the day to improve schedule reliability.
    • Route 556: Weekday trips shift throughout the day to improve schedule reliability.
    • Route SL1: Weekday and Sunday trips shift to improve schedule reliability.
    • Route SL2: Weekday trips shift throughout the day to improve schedule reliability.
    • Route SL3: Outbound trip added at 12:45 AM on weekdays to offer later service.
    • Route SLW: Weekday trips shift throughout the day to improve schedule reliability.
    • Route SL4: Weekday trips shift throughout the day to improve schedule reliability.
